John, 36 x 42", 2022

In this painting I show my husband John at a generational wilderness property in a remote area in Ontario.
The loon looks at him as part of the natural world, and he, in turn, looks out at the viewer. He is a
man of the land. His hands are workworn, gentle and always engaged in a task.
The sun is almost gone and, in the magical light of the evening, the loon calls across the lake.
The surface of the canvas is scarred as is the Canadian shield - pushed and pulled through time
- personifying strength and resilience in a tender, sensitive and fragile ecosystem
- where the loon embodies the natural spirit of the land and where time passes very slowly.
